Hi Krisa,

Yes, it is quite a difficult task to select the relevant information only when you are faced with a lot of numerical data which could be in two different formats, ie a bar chart and a graph.

However, since your report should only be approximately 150 words it is very important to write concisely and avoid listing all the data. Therefore, you should only choose the significant information to include in your report.

One way to do this is to look for results that are very similar and to look for results which are very different. This way you can group the information that is relevant and leave out the rest. Use comparative language to describe the similar results and contrasting linkers to describe the results which are different.

Make a comment about why you think the results are similar or different - what factors could have influenced the results? Is there anything surprising about the results? You can include your own opinion if the answer is not obvious from the data given.

Have a look at the following iPass writing modules which will help you to select and group significant data in Task 1 reports:

Household Spending
Home Computers

If you want personal feedback on your writing don’t forget you can send us up to 4 writing tasks if you sign up as a Key Member. There’s more info about this on our sign-up page which includes a link to an example of our feedback.

Or you can send us individual writing tasks which can be purchased seperately without having to be a Key Member.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Best of luck in your next exam. Keep practising and I’m sure you’ll get there in the end!
