I am a candidate of IELTS, and still struggling for a better band score, especially need to improve speaking and writing.
I was looking for IELTS preparation material on web when I encourtered this site. At first sight, iPass seems not attractive because the forum looks temperate, I mean without many topics and posts. But soon I found the materials provided here are very professnional and helpful. Thanks for all the iPass team and supporters very much. Hope my coming will also help iPass and other candidates a little.
We are still a relatively new site and forums take time to become well-established and well-used. However, we know have just over 2,000 ipass members so we are hoping more people will start making effective use of the forum. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions, get advice and share experience and knowledge.

Woww… thank you for your reply, Jenny. You must be a very kind person. I will do my best to use and appreciate the service of iPass. What does iPass mainly aim? Is iPass for business purpose or more like a charity institution? I’m just curious, why western people like to provide free stuff? such as free software, free education…
I am supposed to be a General IELTS user, because I work, not study. I tried General once last year, and failed to achieve my goal(need 6 of W and S, but got 5.5). But I decide to take Academic next time. The reason for this is I find material and training lessons(in my country) for General is much less than Academic, and I have the sense of that IELTS really prefer Academic to General naturally, like General contains stuff of Academic, but not vice versa. I heard that Academic could be harder. Do you think it’s a problem for me to take Academic one? Will the same level of answers have different band score between General and Academic?
First of all, iPass is not a charity but our aim is to help people from all social and economic backgrounds in their attempt to achieve ielts success. That’s why a lot of our material is free although we do have additional material and an essay assessment service which is only available to paying members.
To answer your other question, whether you take Academic or General IELTS really depends on your reason for taking the exam. If it is for immigration purposes then I would recommend General. However, if it is to work or study in an English speaking environment, then Academic IELTS is the one you need. Universities and colleges usually outline what their entry requirement (band score level) is in their prospectuses. It will depend on the type of course you plan to study.
You should know that the Speaking and Listening exam for both General and Academic is exactly the same. The papers for Reading and Writing, however, are different. In the Writing exam the difference is between writing a letter in the General test and writing a report in the Academic Test. In both tests you have to write a discursive essay.
In the Academic reading exam the texts are longer and more complex, covering a wide range of topics, whereas in the General exam the texts are shorter and more information based.
The same system of marking applies for both General and Academic IELTS (band score between 0-9 is awarded) but the criteria for assessing the Task 1 writing paper is slightly different as one is a letter and the other is a report.
Thank you for your long reply. I don’t know what to say. Enough information about difference between G and A, i think. Even more may be the confidential of IELTS
OK. i go to study. If i get any more questions, i will be right back. Hope you won’t mind my blah
