New Blog Competition! Win €50!

Dear members,

Following the success of our Summer proverbs competition, we are running an Autumn quotations competition to find the wittiest remark or the wisest words spoken throughout history.

Post your favourite quotation on the iPass blog, which could be literary, historical, or contemporary and we will judge the winning entry after the closing date on 30th November.

As an English literature student, my favourite quotes are unsurprisingly both literary ones. The first by the famous C20th English novelist, George Orwell and the second by the C19th English writer, Oscar Wilde.

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. (Orwell, Animal Farm)

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”. (Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan)

So, here is your chance to share with us your favourite quotes and win €50! Two runners-up will also receive a copy of the Oxford Concise Dictionary of Quotations and an iPass Key membership.

The blog page you need is:

http://www.ipass.uk.net/index.php/weblog/

Looking forward to reading your quotes! (Please remember to include an English translation if your quote is in another language).

Best of luck,

Another chance to win a Key Member Subscription!

Dear iPass Members,

In case you missed our last writing competition, here’s a second chance to win a complete Key Member subscription worth $49.95.

All you have to do is answer this IELTS Task 2 question.

Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic.

Very few people who commit crime want to. They do it because they feel they have no choice. This is the reality of the situation, and it means that police and prisons are not relevant to reducing crime.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Remember! As in the real exam, you must write a minimum of 250 words.

Everyone who enters will receive a personal email giving them expert advice on how to improve their exam writing skills. There is no limit to the number of entries you can submit but you will only be judged on the last one entered before the closing date (30th September).

At the end of September we will decide which answer we believe would score the highest in a real IELTS exam and the author of the winning entry will receive a full iPass Key Membership. The winner will be announced in the October newsletter.

Don’t forget to use our Free Writing Modules to help you.

Good luck!

New Competition - win an iPod Shuffle!

Dear iPass Members,

It occurred to me recently that the use of proverbs in our everyday language may well be a thing of the past.

Familiar sayings that have been passed down through the generations such as ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ or ‘more haste less speed’ are clearly becoming outdated (who does any stitching these days?), but are there any new ones ready to take their place?

As an eternal optimist always trying to look on the brighter side of life, my personal favourite is ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ because it represents something good and hopeful coming out of a very bad situation.

Do you have a favourite proverb too?

If so, we would like you to share it with us and tell us why you like it. It can be in any language but an English translation or explanation must also be provided.

The most original entry will win a free iPod shuffle worth £59 which you can see here:

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_shuffle?mco=MTIyMTM

The competition is only open to iPass members so if you are not already a member and you wish to enter please go to our sign-up page:

http://www.ipass.uk.net/index.php/ipass/signup/

Basic membership is free!

The closing date for this competition is 31 August 2009. We look forward to receiving your entries which you can post here or on the iPass blog.

Best wishes,

“If you want apple pie from scratch then first you will have to invnt the Universe”

Why i like this ?
Beacuse when first time i read this saying then i could not undestand the meaning of this saying but i liked it and i saved it in my computer. One day after 2 years when i was in my Masters and i was working on a web development project, we actually have to develop a web portal using “php”, but i have never studied this web progrmming language. I started studying book about PHP related to my queries e.g. how to connect databases and others but i never tried to learn th basics. As a result i always find my self stuck in very small problems. That day i decided to go through basics and i realised that basics will remove lots of mistakes.

The interesting saying is very much familiar to my situation and now i come to know what is the meaning of the sayng. Actually knowledge i so vast and if you think you must know a little thing then be aware you will have t go through lots of knowledge to properly understand that little thing.

Hi Everyone,

Have you seen the new blog competition asking for your personal IELTS stories?

We are asking members or ex-members of iPass who have already taken the IELTS exam to tell us their story.

We would like to know how IELTS has made a difference to your life by enabling you to live, work or study in your chosen country.

We understand that taking the IELTS exam is a difficult, not to mention expensive, challenge for many people, and that’s why we would like to give €100 as the prize for the most original and deserving story.

So, if you have an IELTS story, why not share it with us and be in with a chance of winning. You can write it here or on the blog, or if you prefer you can email it to me personally at jenny at ipass dot uk dot net

I look forward to hearing from you!

Best wishes and good luck to anyone taking their exam soon!
